Doodle Generations 101

*This page is for your reference, if you aren't familiar with generational labels... yet.*

(Disclaimer: While this may be confusing at first it gets much easier with a little time,

and will be greatly helpful in your puppy search as most breeders use this terminology.)

In short, there are three components that make up the doodle generation label: the “F”, the number, and the “B”.

- The “F” stands for “Filial”, and refers to the offspring that is a cross of two purebred dogs.

- The number indicates what generation the doodle is. For example, an F1 is a first generation doodle, and an F2 is the result of breeding two F1 doodles together to get a second generation doodle.

- The “B” simply means “backcross”. Indicating that the doodle was bred back to one or the other of the parent breeds. Generally, but not always, doodles are bred back to a poodle to increase hypoallergenic qualities.

For educational purposes, let’s breakdown Maggie’s puppies generational label.

They are F1BB mini bernedoodles, which means they are hybrid puppies, with ancestry that goes back to a purebred poodle and Bernese mountain dog.  They come from a F1 (first generation) parent bred back to a poodle-- which created Maggie-- and then that F1B doodle (Maggie) was bred back to a poodle (Bluey) again! The resulting puppies are labeled F1BBs.
